This is a topic on which I have often debated with other bloggers. I strongly feel that time management is one of the prerequisites of blogging. This is why 99% of the bloggers either leave or keep blogging for few cents for years. I analyzed my time spent and trying to discuss some common time wasting things for bloggers that needed for blogging time management.

1. Alexa, Analytics and adsense

Do you know how much time you spend in checking alexa rank, viewing

Time wasting habits of bloggers

analytics and adsense. Is it really necessary to check visitors/income/rank time wasting habits of bloggersevery minute? Checking the stats again and again does nothing but killing your precious time which could have been utilized in writing valuable posts. Check the stats only once a day only to get a broad idea and how your SEO is working.

2. Subscribing to a lot of RSS feeds

As bloggers we are trying to accumulate a lot of rss feeds to get new ideas for blogging. I know a few people who subscribed more than 200 feeds. This is the major time waster we need to take control of it. Subscribing to a fewer number of feeds related to our blogging intrests definitely do some good.

3. Themes and plugins

Most bloggers change their blog’s theme very often and keep downloading new plugins every time they see a good looking blog or nice plugins in it. would this colour look more attractive, Maybe the sidebar could be wider, or footer look better in blue, or this ad unit would better suits here. Don’t think more about the theme/plugins. Leave the template alone and spare some time for this once in a week.

4. SEO and Link Building

People nowadays start doing a massive link campaign and waste lot of initial enthusiasm and effort in doing so just after few posts. In order to promote our blog or websites, all of us spend some time at social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Technorati, and StumbleUpon. You may be making friends, adding favourite sites or updating your articles to be indexed by these social bookmarking sites. We all know link building helps blogs a lot. But is it the only thing to succeed in blogosphere ? All those great bloggers out there have written over 1000 posts to succeed. Initially we need to concentrate more on blogging, not on the SEO or link building.

5. Email, IM and social networking

Do we really need to reply to every email as soon as it hits the inbox? We are not working in the help desk of emergency services. Also with online chats, we are constantly checking who is online, so that we could “talk” to them. This is another counter-productive activity! Try to Check email once/twice a day.

Many people spend a lot of time at Facebook, MySpace, Hi5, or Friendster in the name of social networking or keeping in touch with friends and family. However, a lot of them go there to play games and do other unproductive activities.

To a certain extent, we all are guilty of this. Try to find your own ways to get out of this. Stop Thinking and Start blogging.

PHP and Ruby on Rails both have their very dedicated followers. It really depends on what sort of development you would like to do. Having experience with both, anyone can say go with what you are more familiar with, and with what your developers are capable of. It is much easier to find PHP programmers than Ruby/Rails developers. Deployment and server configuration are easy with Php.

Many argue that RoR performs better, but then again Facebook and google uses PHP, so it can’t be that great. My preference lays in favour of PHP, because I prefer the C style syntax, although Ruby has many great advantages in its code (namely many shortcuts for iterations).

It is difficult to compare both but we can conclude “While Ruby on Rails has some great features; the market has already declared the winner to be PHP.”

I want to buy a website and so want to check when a website was created? There are many occasions when you would want to find out when a website was created? There are a few techniques to find out when a website was created, Here we are discussing them

By Checking When a domain name was registered

Go to a Whois data search website like Domaintools.com. It is connected to the central ICANN database. Type the website address (such as altmint.com) into the search box. Click enter to search. Look for the “Created on” date — this will show the day, month and year when the website was first created.

By this we can find when a website url was registered, for most of the sites (almost 99%) creation date is different from domain registered date.

By Checking with JavaScript

There is one more simple trick that can be used to find out when a web page was created or last updated. To find out when a particular page was last updated, head to the page and type (or copy and paste) the following line into your address bar:

javascript:alert(document.lastModified)

Note that the code says lastModified. If the document is created and untouched since then, then the date created is equal to the date updated or modified.

If you’re on a page with “dynamic” elements , this isn’t too helpful. Since the page is basically updated every time it’s loaded, you’ll just get a box with the current date and time you landed on the page. Almost 90% websites load dynamically.

By Using Alexa Historical Data

You can use the Historical Traffic operation of the Alexa Web Information Service (please visit http://aws.amazon.com/awis/) to retrieve historical traffic data. The Historical Traffic action gives programmatic access to web site Traffic Rank, Reach, and Page Views going back to September 2007. Sites like http://en.wikidomia.org/ providing creation date using this technique.

You can register with alexa and get the first traffic date by checking the historical data, First traffic date is very much closer to website creation date. So we can use this approximation.

This method works for the websites created after September 2007.

By using the Google advanced search

Here’s a simple hack to help you know when a web page or web domain was created on the Internet. Go to google.com and copy-paste the full URL of the web page in the search box along with the inurl: operator (e.g. inurl:www.altmint.com). Hit enter.

http://www.google.co.in/search?hl=en&q=inurl%3Aaltmint.com&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

Now go to browser address bar and copy-paste “&as_qdr=y15″ at the end of the Google search URL. Hit enter again.

http://www.google.co.in/search?hl=en&q=inurl%3Aaltmint.com&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&as_qdr=y15

Google will load the results again and this time, you’ll see Google search results as in this screenshot.

How to find out when a website was created?

This is date that when the page appeared in the google results for the first time. This trick works for the websites created after 31 Jan 2001, probably this is because Google’s crawler database does not include pages prior to that date.

Also we can inspect with archive.org to know the history, please let us know If you know more tricks like this.

What is Alexa?

Alexa is a very powerful tool used to rank web site traffic. This is a most popular tool to find out how well your site ranks up against millions of other sites on the Web

Alexa Internet, Inc. is a Chicago-based subsidiary company of Amazon.com that is known for its toolbar and website. Once installed, the toolbar collects data on browsing behavior which is transmitted to the website where it is stored and analyzed and is the basis for the company’s web traffic reporting.

Here is how Alexa describes their service –

Alexa provides information about websites including Top Sites, Internet Traffic Stats and Metrics, Related Links, Online Reviews Contact Information and Search Analytics for SEM and SEO optimization. The Alexa Toolbar is a browser add-on that shows data about sites as you surf the web.

What is Alexa Toolbar?

The Alexa Toolbar, is a browser add-on produced by Alexa Internet for Internet Explorer on Microsoft Windows that is used by Alexa to measure website statistics.

It includes a popup blocker, a search engine entry box, a link to Amazon.com, a link to Alexa, information about the current Alexa ranking of the website that the user is visiting, and links relevant to the site the user is browsing. By early 2005 there had been over 10 million downloads of the toolbar, according to Alexa. But the company does not provide info on how many of them are actually used.

What is alexa rank ?

Alexa Rank is a web site traffic rank provided by alexa.

How alexa measures the traffic rank?

The Alexa traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users).

How accurate is Alexa?

If you read the disclaimers on the Alexa traffic rankings help page, you will see that Alexa notes for popular sites (lower ranking number) the data is more accurate given the greater sample source, but for lower ranking sites of 100,000+ the accuracy can be dubious. I would not trust AlexaRank as an authority on traffic. However as a traffic trend watching tool, I think AlexaRank is valuable and certainly helpful for researching other sites, since the data is public.

So when is Alexa useful?

Amongst SEO’s Alexa is regarded as a good source of relative data, but the absolute data should be treated with some caution (ie if one site ranks higher than another on Alexa Traffic Rank data, that’s probably true – but I wouldn’t believe the actual numbers necessarilly). The data becomes more reliable the closer to the top of the ranking you get, as the effects of SEO spam get drowned out. The conclusion is that Alexa is useful in certain situations as a broad indicator but can’t be taken too much at face value.

Redesign and new statistics

On March 31, 2009, Alexa.com underwent a complete redesign with new metrics including: Pageviews per User, Bounce Rate, and Time on Site. In the following weeks they added new features including Demographics, Clickstream and Search Traffic stats. These new features were introduced in order to compete with other services such as Compete.com and Quantcast.

Is alexa a Spyware/spamware/adware?

The Alexa toolbar is regarded by many vendors, such as Symantec and McAfee, as spyware. Symantec classifies the toolbar as trackware. McAfee classifies it as Adware, a “Potentially Unwanted Program.”McAfee Site Advisor rates the Alexa website as yellow, with the warning:
“In our tests, we found downloads on this site that some people consider adware, spyware or other potentially unwanted programs

How to block alexa from mesuring my website’s rank?

What is DNS propagation.

When a new domain name is registered (or an existing one is transferred to a new DNS), the information must be updated in the entire ISP’s and root servers around the world. This updating process is called as DNS propagation.

DNS propagation time and Problems during the propagation.

Any time that DNS changes are made on any level, you will need to wait for the propagation to complete and this will usually takes 3-4 days (72-96 hours). During propagation, traffic may come to either location. One person may see the new server while the other person sees the old one. Also, your domain name may work and may not too. All of this is normal during propagation. This means that just because you go to the new site when you type in the domain name does not mean that propagation is complete.

Detailed explanation of propagation

DNS stands for Domain Name Service. Every time you go to a web site using a domain name, you are using DNS. Your request for that domain name goes to your local primary or secondary DNS server which is usually administered by your ISP. Your local DNS server check its records to see if it knows what IP address that domain points to. If it does, then it directs you to that IP address. If it does not, then it sends a query to the Root DNS servers.

The Root servers are what make the process work. When a domain is registered, it is added to the Root servers. When a domain is expired, it is removed from the Root servers. The Root servers tell your local DNS server which DNS servers are the authorities for your domain.

Your local DNS server then queries the authorities DNS server, and that server tells your local DNS server what IP address is the domain located. Your local DNS server then caches the information. This process is essential because it does not only does it speed up future queries but also reduces the load on the Root servers.

This process leads to the propagation.
Your local DNS server will not keep that information forever. It will be kept for a certain amount of time, at one point it deletes it. The next time, which is after the information is deleted when you try to visit that domain, the process will start all over again.

DNS Propagation Check

DNS Propagation will usually takes 3-4 days (72-96 hours).   There are a lot of tools available on the web to check DNS propagation. With the DNS propagation checkers you can verify that with a few DNS servers around the world.  Enter in a domain name and it will check what IP it is associated with through several ISP DNS caches.

99% of the time this is completely useless, but if you have just moved a domain name this can be helpful to see how the propagation is going.

How to Speed up DNS Propagation

The well-known way to do this, is to lower your TTL values for a while before making a DNS change.  However, there are three big issues with this:

1) sometimes you don’t know when you’ll be making such a change

2) lots of ISPs set the DNS TTL to several days, and stubbornly refuse to make an exception for you, particularly because you generally ask them when you are leaving as a customer.

3) Various client programs and DNS client modules do their own caching, and do not process DNS TLL anywhere near correctly.

I have now concluded that to be completely safe (i.e., no person or search engine will think your site is missing), you should allow a week overlap – the server at the old IP address should continue to work for that duration.

Private Domain Name Registration

A private domain registration will keep your personal information (name, email address, etc.) out of the global Internet database, and will prevent a lot of spam from reaching your email box.  You have the option of getting a private domain registration with every domain you register.

ICANN, the governing body of domain names requires every registrar to maintain a publicly accessible WHOIS directory for all domains that are registered.  This means your personal information is made available to anyone who wants to see it.

With a private domain registration, you can keep your personal information private via a new and unique process that is supported by two patent applications.

With a private domain registration, domain company name, address and phone number are made publicly available in the WHOIS directory — not yours.

Litigation

With “private registration”, the private registration service is the legal owner of the domain. This has occasionally resulted in legal problems.

In a trademark infringement case, a 2009 United States District Court ruling in U.S.A. held that, for domains with “private registration”, the privacy service is legally the “owner” of the domain. The privacy service acts as the “cyber-landlord of the Internet real estate”, and the domain is “licensed” to the customer of the privacy service.

How to register a domain name - Registering a domain name is one of the first steps in establishing a web site.

Registering a domain name

Registering a domain name is one of the first steps in establishing a web site. The domain name identifies your website on the Internet.

There are three steps involved in registering a domain name:

Choosing the domain name
Checking if the domain name available
Registering the domain name

Choosing the domain name

Don’t register domain names that are too long. You can register names up to 63 characters long, but that doesn’t mean you have to use all 63 characters.

Include keywords in the name- A keyword is a word that will be used by people searching the net. I highly recommend you register a name that contains your major keywords instead of your company name. If it has already been taken the consider using it in a combination separated by hyphens, because all search engines treat the hyphens as spaces

Consider registering a generic name, if one that makes sense for your organization is still available.

Try to choose a name that has positive connotations in all languages.

Checking if the domain name available

To register a domain name, it is simply a matter of performing a domain name ‘look up’ to find a name that isn’t already taken (since all domain names must be unique).

Registering the domain name

There are many domain registration companies available. It doesn’t matter where you register your domain. Every registrar provides the same services.

Here I am listing some affordable / cheap domain registration companies.

GoDaddy.com – World’s No.1 Domain Name Registrar

Top-Level Domains

A domain name “extension” is called a “top-level domain (TLD).” These are divided into three different categories: generic top-level domains (gTLD), country code top-level domains (ccTLD) and infrastructure top-level domains.

Generic top-level domains are the ones most frequently seen on the Web:

.com (originally intended for use by commercial organizations but is available to anyone).

.net (originally intended for use by sites directly related to the internet  but is available to anyone).

.org (originally intended for use by non-profit organizations but is available to anyone).

.edu (used by educational organizations).

.gov (reserved for agencies of the United States government).

.mil (reserved for the United States military).

.int (reserved for international organizations established by treaty. i.e. the European Union: http://europa.eu.int).

.aero (reserved for members of the air transport industry).

.biz (for use by businesses only).

.coop (reserved for cooperative associations).

.info.

.museum (reserved for museums).

.name (reserved for individuals).

.pro (being developed for professionals and related entities).

The next top-level domains are the two letter country codes. These are used to designate a country or a dependent territory. For instance, in the URL http://bsnl.in/, the “in” represents the India. A listing of all country codes can be found on the IANA Web site. IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) oversees the allocation of all TLD’s.

The top-level domain infrastructure is limited to “.arpa” and is used exclusively for Internet-infrastructure purposes. The .arpa designation comes from the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the government agency which formulated the Internet.
